Air Hammer            Air Hammer

This is my first Air Hammer, I just finished it over Christmas(2000)!  It was built with the ABANA plans from Ron Kinyon , using the reduction plans from Larry Zoeller , part of the air system plans from AFC & many of my own modifications to fit my ideas and the materials I had handy.  Most of the parts are scrounged from local scrap yards & flea markets!  The main body is a 16" X 7.25" I-Beam.  I cut out & faced the work opening.  I had to add some spacers to the hammer head because I forgot to account for the 3" extension that is supposed to be on the cylinder rod, the cylinders I found didn't have it.  The hammer head is 35#'s.  The anvil is a piece of 5" round, cut from some kind of axel I found at the scrapyard.  The cylindar has a 1.5" bore, 5/8" shaft & 11" stroke, made by Parker.  I'm getting about 200 strokes per minute on this!!  I'm only using a small 5hp, 30 gallon Craftsman compressor & it keeps up just fine for me.  I'm using a foot treadle like on a Little Giant for control.  I have excellent control with this system.  I can get very light hits or very hard hits or anywhere in between.  I can get single hits very eaisly also, so it eliminates the need for a treadle hammer!  Actually, I'll probably build a treadle hammer one of these days too!

I used the 3-way valve that Larry Zoeller called for in his plans.  I'm not sure how much difference this valve makes over a regular ball valve with a spring return.  I'm thinking that the ball valve would work just as well for much less money.  One of these days I'll probably put one on there & use the 3-way for a pnumatic vise or something like that.

I have links to ABANA and Larry Zoeller's pages on my links page if anyone  is interested in building one or seeing the plans I used.

Please feel free to E-Mail me with any questions, I'd be glad to help anyone who wants to build one of these.
