Ballista or Lithobolos from the time of Alexander the Great.  This is a model I made in 1992 from a small line drawing I found in a book.  The book said they were originally about 3 stories tall & used in seige towers.  They can hurl stones or spears or whatever you wanted!  It is a torsion type ballista, meaning it uses the force stored in the twisted rope to propel an object.
